ChatGPT Work

In ChatGPT, you pick between two modes. Chat answers your questions. Work takes a whole task, breaks it into steps and hands you a finished deliverable: a document, a spreadsheet, a deck, a report or a site.

Definition

ChatGPT Work, in plain words

Chat is the conversation. Work is the "do it for me" box. You describe the result you want, and ChatGPT searches, analyzes and puts it together on its own.

In the ChatGPT desktop app, Work can also use your files and apps, with your permission. On the web and on your phone, it runs in the cloud.

A concrete example

You switch to Work and write "from these three quotes, build me a comparison table and tell me which one to pick". It hands back the table, ready to open.

Why it matters

You go from answers you copy and paste to finished documents.

In ChatGPT on the web, on your phone and in the desktop app (Mac and Windows), with a paid plan.

Don't mix it up with

Cowork (Claude) : Cowork is Claude working on your computer. You give it a folder, and it reads, sorts and creates files inside it.

Agent mode : Agent mode is when AI stops just answering and chains several actions on its own to reach a goal.

Common mistakes

  • Using Work for a quick question, when Chat answers faster.
  • Giving it your files without checking what it does with them.
  • Assuming the result is right because it looks polished.
