Cowork (Claude)

Cowork is Claude going beyond answers. In the Claude desktop app, you give it a folder on your computer, and it reads your documents, sorts them and creates new ones from a single sentence.

Definition

Cowork (Claude), in plain words

In a regular chat, you copy, paste and redo things yourself. With Cowork, Claude does the job end to end and hands you finished files: a spreadsheet, a deck, a tidy folder.

In late 2026, Cowork is gradually merging into the regular Claude conversation. You ask, and Claude decides on its own whether to answer or to do the work. If you still see two buttons, "Chat" and "Cowork", pick Cowork for this kind of task.

A concrete example

You give Claude your Downloads folder and write "sort all of this by type and date". It creates the subfolders and moves the files into them.

Why it matters

It is the simplest way to put AI to work on your real files, with no terminal and no code.

In the Claude desktop app, on Mac and Windows, with a paid plan (Pro or higher).

Don't mix it up with

Agent mode : Agent mode is when AI stops just answering and chains several actions on its own to reach a goal.

ChatGPT Work : Work is the ChatGPT mode that completes a whole task, in several steps, and hands back a document, a spreadsheet, a deck or a site.

Common mistakes

  • Giving it your whole drive instead of a single folder.
  • Closing the app while it works on your files, which stops the task.
  • Handing it important files with no backup copy.
