Midjourney v7

Midjourney v7 is the image generation model from the independent studio Midjourney, which has done nothing but this since 2022. Its strength: the best-looking output out of the box, no fancy prompt required. You give it three words, it hands you four gorgeous visuals, and you can pass it an image so it copies a given style.

— What it is

Midjourney v7, in plain words

In plain words: it's the image tool that puts beauty first. You don't have to rack your brain over the prompt, it makes everything look 'magazine' by default.

The big strength: you give it 3 words, it hands you 4 gorgeous visuals. No fancy prompt needed. And you can pass it a reference image so it copies a given style (the Style Reference feature).

You get in on the midjourney.com site (a direct account) or on Discord. The "Draft" mode is super fast for exploring ideas in a few seconds.

What I use it for

My favorite ways to use Midjourney:

  • Inspiration visuals: when I'm hunting for a style for a project, I generate 20 variations and keep the ones that catch my eye.
  • Good-looking social posts: an Instagram visual, a LinkedIn cover. Midjourney turns out beautiful stuff with no effort.
  • Blog illustrations: my articles get a real visual identity, not generic stock.
  • Mood boards: free exploration of a visual world before I brief a real designer.
  • Characters and portraits: Midjourney renders human faces with a rare finesse.

How it compares

vs Flux Pro: Flux is more precise on prompt fidelity and text. Midjourney looks prettier out of the box. The call: precision vs beauty.

vs Imagen 4 (Google): Imagen is fast and cheaper (from $0.02/image). Midjourney keeps the stylistic edge but costs more.

vs DALL-E 3 (OpenAI): DALL-E is built into ChatGPT (super handy). Midjourney stays several lengths ahead on raw output.

What it costs

Subscription prices as of May 2026 (source: midjourney.com):

  • Basic: $10/month (~200 fast images / month)
  • Standard: $30/month (15 h of fast generation + unlimited in slow mode)
  • Pro: $60/month (30 h fast + private mode)
  • Mega: $120/month (60 h fast)

No official public API (never has been). Access is by web/Discord subscription. Third-party integrations exist through reverse engineering, but they're against the terms of service.

My take

Midjourney is still my go-to for pure beauty. When I want visuals that pop with no effort, it's the one.

What bugs me: no official API, so it's impossible to integrate cleanly into a tool or a site. Everything goes through the web or Discord.

If you create visuals regularly, the Standard plan at $30/month pays off nicely. If you generate 2 images a month, Flux or Imagen via Replicate will be cheaper.

Quick questions

Does Midjourney have an API?

Midjourney v7 is the image model from the independent studio Midjourney (since 2022). Known for the best-looking output out of the box and its Style Reference feature, it has no official API: access is through the web or Discord.

Which subscription tier should I start with?

Basic at $10/month is enough to try it out. Move up to Standard if you do this more than 2-3 times a week.

Does Midjourney write text inside images?

Better than before in v7, but Flux is still more reliable on this front.
