What I use it for
The cases where Imagen 4 earns its keep for me:
- Low-budget volume: generating 100 visuals in Fast mode costs $2. Perfect for testing at scale.
- Visuals inside Google Slides or Docs: Imagen is built right into Workspace through Gemini. I type, I insert.
- Text inside the image: posters and banners. It's been good since Imagen 3 already.
- Ultra mode for final visuals: once I've locked in the concept, I rerun it in Ultra for the top-tier render.
- SafeSearch-guaranteed visuals: for sensitive enterprise use, Google filters out forbidden content natively.
How it compares
vs Flux Pro: Flux is more precise on complex details. Imagen is cheaper and faster on volume.
vs Midjourney v7: Midjourney keeps the aesthetic edge. Imagen is more practical for production (official API, clear pricing).
vs DALL-E 3 (OpenAI): Pretty close call. DALL-E is built into ChatGPT, Imagen into Gemini. Pick based on your ecosystem.
What it costs
API pricing as of May 2026 (source: ai.google.dev/pricing):
- Imagen 4 Fast: $0.02 per image
- Imagen 4 Standard: $0.04 per image
- Imagen 4 Ultra: $0.06 per image
On the consumer side: included in Google AI Pro at $19.99/month with a generous quota. Fully unlocked in Google AI Ultra at $249/month.
My take
Imagen 4 doesn't put out the prettiest images on the market. But at this price, on volume, it's unbeatable.
When I need a clean visual fast and I'm already in Gemini or Google Docs, I pull it up right there. Simpler than heading over to Midjourney for a single image.
If you live in the Google ecosystem, Imagen is your go-to reflex. Otherwise, Flux stays more versatile.
