Mistral Large 3

Mistral Large 3 is the flagship model from France's Mistral AI in 2026, released under the Apache 2.0 license: so it's truly open-source, not just open-weight. If you want a European model that's sovereign and clearly free, this is the go-to option, and it's especially good in French.

Mistral Large 3, in plain words

In plain words: it's a made-in-Paris model you can download, modify, and even resell with no restrictions, with data that stays in Europe.

Mistral Large 3 is their 2026 flagship model. A 262,000-token context window, multilingual (excellent in French, German, Italian, Spanish), Apache 2.0 license — the most permissive on the market. You can download the weights, modify them, resell them, no restrictions.

Available through their API (the platform is called "La Plateforme"), through their consumer app "Le Chat", or as a free download on Hugging Face.

What it does for me

  • Data sovereignty: for a French law firm that doesn't want its case files ending up at OpenAI, Mistral is the go-to option (data centers in Europe).
  • Excellent in French: Mistral is trained on a ton of French, and it shows. The tone is very natural, none of those awkwardly translated American turns of phrase.
  • Genuinely free open-source: no hidden clauses like Llama, no restrictions on commercial use. Apache 2.0 is rock solid.
  • Le Chat is free: the consumer app offers a generous free tier, unlike ChatGPT/Claude which hit their caps fast.
  • Technical drafts: code, contracts, sales emails in French — it's solid.

How it compares

vs Claude Sonnet 4.6 / GPT-5.5: Mistral is behind on raw intelligence and complex reasoning, but ahead on French and sovereignty. Pick Mistral for professional French use cases where the data has to stay in Europe.

vs Llama 4: Mistral has a genuinely free license (Apache 2.0), while Llama comes with restrictions past 700M users. Mistral is better in French, and Llama has a more mature ecosystem internationally.

vs DeepSeek V3.2: DeepSeek is cheaper and a notch above on benchmarks. Mistral wins on European sovereignty and French.

What it costs

API pricing as of May 25, 2026 (source: mistral.ai/pricing):

  • Input: $0.50 / million tokens
  • Output: $1.50 / million tokens
  • Model weights: free on Hugging Face, Apache 2.0 license
  • Le Chat: free for standard use, €15/month for Pro

My take

I use it for professional French content that has to stay in Europe (my brother's firm's clients, for example). Not my everyday go-to model, but the only one I recommend without hesitation for sovereignty.

What I like: the Apache 2.0 license (truly free), the quality of the French, and the fact that it's a French company you can get behind.

What bugs me: the quality is still half a notch below the American models on complex tasks, and Le Chat is less polished than ChatGPT or Claude.

Quick questions

Is Mistral really French?

Mistral Large 3 is the flagship model from Mistral AI (a French startup) in 2026, released under Apache 2.0, so it's genuinely open-source. Multilingual and excellent in French, data hosted in Europe, available through the API, the Le Chat app, or as a free download.

Is Le Chat free?

Yes, standard use is free. Pro is €15/month for more volume.

Apache 2.0 vs the Meta license: what's the difference?

Apache 2.0 = no restrictions. The Meta license = a commercial license is required past 700M users.
