ElevenLabs v3

ElevenLabs v3 is the most believable text-to-speech engine out there today. You use it to turn text into a natural-sounding voice (voiceovers, podcasts, messages), with controllable emotions and multilingual support: I can have it read an English email with a French accent, or clone my voice from 30 seconds of recording.

— What it is

ElevenLabs v3, in plain words

In plain words: you paste in some text, you pick a voice from the library (or clone your own), and it hands you back an MP3 that sounds real.

In practice, I paste in some text, I pick a voice from the library (or clone my own), and it hands me back an MP3. Multilingual: it can move from French to English to Spanish without changing the grain of the voice.

The app and the API are simple. For long-form work, there's also an "Audio Studio" product for podcasts and audiobooks.

What I actually use it for

The uses where ElevenLabs really earns its keep for me:

  • Voiceovers for short videos: Instagram Reels, video posts on LinkedIn. No more recording my own voice across three takes to get clean sound.
  • Automated short podcasts: a 10-minute text brief becomes a listenable podcast after 5 minutes of generation.
  • Consistent multilingual voice: to reach an English-speaking audience without redoing my accent.
  • Cloning my own voice: 30 seconds of recording and ElevenLabs can read anything in my voice. Handy for pre-recorded messages.
  • Testing scripts: having my "AI double" read a script before I record it for real. I can hear whether it lands.

How it compares

vs OpenAI Voice (GPT-4o Realtime): OpenAI is better for real-time dialogue (voice conversations). ElevenLabs is better for pre-generated voiceovers.

vs Cartesia Sonic: Cartesia is faster (~a few hundred ms) for real-time uses. ElevenLabs keeps the crown on expressive quality.

vs Google TTS / Azure TTS: Google and Microsoft are cheaper but sound more robotic. ElevenLabs holds the quality edge.

What it costs

Subscription prices as of May 2026 (source: elevenlabs.io/pricing):

  • Starter: $5/month (~30 min of HD audio)
  • Creator: $22/month (~100 min of HD audio + cloning)
  • Pro: $99/month (~500 min of HD audio)
  • Pay-as-you-go API plan: roughly $0.17 to $0.36 per minute depending on the model

There's a free trial with ~10 minutes a month.

My take

It's my default voice tool. I haven't found anything that does better for high-quality voiceovers.

A word of caution on voice cloning: it's powerful, but it raises obvious ethical questions. ElevenLabs has put guardrails in place (consent verification before cloning a real person), but stay careful in how you use it.

If you make audio content regularly, the Creator plan at $22 is the right entry point.
