Here's what I found: free tools, a simple method, and a few things worth knowing before you upload your great-grandmother's photo to the internet.
Before you dive in, it's worth understanding what these tools actually do under the hood. It's not magic. It's reconstruction.
An AI photo restoration tool can remove dust and scratches, reduce blur and digital noise, recover lost contrast, upscale a low-quality scan, and rebuild facial details. It can also add color to a black-and-white photo. All of this automatically, without you touching a single slider.
What sets this apart from classic software like Photoshop is speed and accessibility. You don't need to know what a layer or a levels curve is. You upload, you click, you download. Canva includes an app called "Colorize" that uses AI to turn black-and-white photos into colorized images with natural tones. If you already use Canva for other things, it's the most direct path: no need to create an account somewhere else.
Fotor is an all-in-one editor that includes old photo restoration among its features. It claims 800 million users worldwide according to its own data (August 2026), and a 97% satisfaction rate on Apple's App Store. Those numbers come from Fotor itself, so take them with the usual grain of salt. But the tool is solid and accessible.
Remini is a very popular mobile app (Android and iOS) for restoration and image enhancement. It's particularly well known for reconstructing blurry or pixelated faces. Useful if you'd rather work from your phone than a computer.
VanceAI offers restoration and colorization tools available as a web version or desktop software for Windows. It's a good option if you want to process a lot of photos without sending them to a remote server, which raises fewer privacy concerns.
If you only have one photo to test, start with Hotpot.ai for restoration and Palette.fm for colorization. Both are free, quick to pick up, and don't require creating an account for a first try.

Here's my concrete method, no unnecessary steps.
Step 1: scan your photo properly. Before you even think about AI, the quality of your scan matters. A flatbed scanner gives better results than a phone photo. If you don't have a scanner, some public libraries lend them out. The higher the starting resolution, the more material the AI has to work with.
Step 2: figure out what you need. Restoration (fixing physical damage) or colorization (adding color)? Both? Some tools do both in a single pass, others specialize. It's often better to restore first, then colorize, so the colorization AI works from a clean image.
Step 3: upload to your chosen tool. On Hotpot.ai, for example, go to the "Restore Old Photo" section, drag in your file, and start the process. Step 4: compare and adjust. Most tools show a before/after view. Look closely at the details, especially faces. Sensitive content could influence future AI outputs or become part of its internal knowledge base indefinitely.
That's not always the case. But it's a real possibility.
Take two minutes to read the privacy policy of the tool you're using, especially the section on image usage rights. If you can't find that information easily, that's a signal.
