Creating a song
without ever having
touched an instrument

You want music for your brand, a podcast intro, or you just want to see what AI can actually do with notes? Same — and I have zero musical training. What I found: these tools have come so far that you can now produce a complete track in minutes. But there are traps to avoid, especially around rights. I'm sharing everything I figured out here, with numbers and sources to back it up.

Can you really do this with no training?

Yes. And that's not marketing copy.

Until recently, making a song meant knowing how to play an instrument, understanding music theory, or paying a composer. Today, you can type a sentence into a web interface and get back a track with a real voice, lyrics, and a coherent musical structure.

It's not magic. It's generative AI applied to audio. And according to a LANDR survey published in February 2026 of more than 1,200 artists, 87% of them had already used AI in at least one part of their music-making process. If professional musicians are weaving it into their workflow, an entrepreneur with no musical background can absolutely do the same.

What I care about here is practical use. Not the philosophy of art in the age of AI. Just: how you do it, with what, and what you're actually allowed to do with the result.

Because that's where a lot of people trip up. You create a nice jingle, put it in a YouTube video, and realize too late you didn't have the rights to do that.


Suno and Udio: what they actually do

Two tools clearly dominate in 2026: Suno and Udio. They work differently, but both let a non-musician generate a complete track from a simple text description.

Suno released version 5.5 in March 2026. The updates are significant: personalized voice cloning, training models on your own voice, and studio-quality track generation that can exceed 8 minutes. In July 2026, Suno also upgraded its lyrics module with a built-in "Lyricist": you can edit lines in plain language, ask for word-by-word variations, and everything saves automatically. It's the kind of interface that makes you forget you're not a musician.

Udio launched version 4 in 2026 with a slightly more technical approach. Audio is in stereo 48kHz, tracks can run up to 10 minutes, and the tool offers a "Magic Edit" feature that lets you modify a specific section of a track without regenerating the whole thing. There's also Stem Separation 2.0 and style transfer: you can take the vibe of an existing track and apply it to your creation.

For an entrepreneur, the practical difference is simple:

Both have free and paid plans. And that distinction is going to matter a lot in a moment.

The trap to avoid

Don't test a tool on the free plan and then drop the result into a commercial video, a website, or a campaign. Suno's free plan gives you zero commercial rights over the music generated. This point gets overlooked constantly — and it can be costly.


From idea to song, in practice

Here's how I do it, step by step.

1. Define the style

Before I even open Suno or Udio, I spend a few minutes figuring out what I want. Genre, tempo, mood, dominant instruments, whether there's a voice or not. The more specific your description, the closer the result is to what you're imagining.

If you're not sure how to phrase that, this is exactly the moment to use a well-built prompt. What you type into Suno is a prompt. And just like with image or text generation, the quality of your description changes everything.

2. Write (or have written) the lyrics

Suno has had its own "Lyricist" since July 2026, but I find that a language model like ChatGPT or Claude often produces better lyrics when you give it precise context. You can tell it: "I want a 3-verse pop song about starting a business, optimistic tone, catchy chorus." Then paste the result into Suno.

Suno 5.5 supports voice cloning: you can train a model on your own voice. For entrepreneurial use (brand jingle, podcast intro), that's a powerful option. If you'd rather not use your voice, the default generated voices are very convincing on paid plans.

The first generation is rarely perfect. I generate several variants, keep the pieces I like, and reuse the sections that work. Udio lets you edit a specific section without redoing everything. Suno lets you extend a track or regenerate part of it. Expect around ten attempts before you have something you're ready to use.


What you're actually allowed to do with it

This is the part nobody reads carefully enough. And yet it's where everything is decided for an entrepreneur.

Suno is clear on this (source: terms of use verified in April 2026):

If you want to use Suno music in an ad, on your website, in a monetized YouTube video, or in a paid product, you need to be on a paid plan. Non-negotiable.

Copyright under French law

This one's more complex. Under French law, only a human being can be the author of a creative work. Music entirely generated by AI, without significant human creative input, cannot be protected by copyright. That's the current position of French law, confirmed in May 2026.

What that means in practice: if you generate a track by typing just "happy pop song" and change nothing, you probably can't claim authorship of that work. On the other hand, if you wrote the lyrics, defined the structure, chose the stylistic elements, and iterated on the result, your creative contribution can be recognized.

The line hasn't been perfectly drawn by French courts yet. But the more documented and significant your involvement, the stronger your position.

The shadow hanging over training data

In July 2026, leaked internal documents revealed that Suno may have trained its AI on millions of copyright-protected tracks, sourced in part from YouTube Music and Deezer. This case is ongoing and has no definitive legal resolution as of this article's publication date.

At the same time, the EU AI Act has required providers of generative AI models to publish a summary of the content used for training since August 2025. For commercial use, get a paid plan and document your creative contribution: the lyrics you wrote, the iterations you made, the stylistic choices you imposed. That's what makes the difference between "the AI did everything" and "I created with AI."


Language models as co-authors of your lyrics

Suno and Udio handle the music. But for lyrics, a language model can be a better starting point.

ChatGPT (running on GPT-5.6 Sol since July 2026 for paid plans), Claude Opus 4.7 from Anthropic (available since April 2026), and Gemini 3.6 Flash from Google (available since July 2026) are all capable of generating quality lyrics if you give them a precise brief.

Here's what I do: I describe the context (theme, tone, target audience, desired structure), ask for several versions, mix the best lines, and paste the result into Suno. The advantage of a language model over Suno's built-in Lyricist is its ability to handle complex semantic nuances and respect a specific style or brand constraint.

Do you need musical knowledge to create a song with AI?

No. Suno and Udio are designed to work from text descriptions. You describe the style, tempo, mood, and lyrics, and the tool generates the track. No music theory required. That said, the more precise your description, the better the result — and for that, knowing how to write a good prompt helps a lot.

Can I use music generated with the free versions of Suno or Udio commercially?

My takeaways

I never thought I'd make music one day. And yet, after a few hours exploring Suno, I produced tracks I actually use.

What I take away from this experience: the tool is accessible, but the legal framework demands attention. Getting a paid plan if you want to use the music commercially, documenting your creative contribution, and staying informed on how rights evolve — those are the three reflexes to build.

And according to 2026 data, nearly 60,000 AI-generated tracks are uploaded to streaming platforms every day — roughly 39% of all music published online. This isn't a geek curiosity anymore — it's an industrial reality.

As an entrepreneur, you don't need to become a musician. You need to understand the tools, know what you can do with them, and integrate them intelligently into what you're building.
